The Government National School Lunch Program

Do you think the government is doing everything in its power to provide a healthy lunch program and an end to obesity? The National School Lunch Program is a part of the government which is responsible for providing all the lunches in participating schools around the United States. The schools pay for the meals but the federal reimbursement pays the schools back for the lunches. They spend an aggregated amount of 9.7 billion dollars a year. Reimbursement; is to pay someone for damage or money already spent. They give reimbursements only when schools provide nutritious meals to students. The lunches provided 1/3 of students recommended calories which is made up of 30% fat and 10% saturated fats. Their goal is to try and cut back on fatty foods, by increasing in fruits, vegetables, and nutritious foods. According to USDA research, children who participate in the school lunch program have more nutritional intake than ones that don’t part take. However, after all these changes in the food lunch program, obesity continues through others lives today. 17 % of children from the ages 6 to 11 are obese and 17.6% of adolescences of 12 to 19 are obese. These children are vulnerable to diseases, even after the governments best efforts to provide nutritional meals. In order to have much more healthy children the government has created a policy called Provision 2. This allows each and every student to receive free meals despite of their income. However, even after reimbursements and Provision 2 the government still spends more on the military then school education and school meals for students.
